1492 exhibit- Incursions in North America
      US - Southeast
Incursions in North America The French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English arrived in North America in the 16th century, sporadically and in small numbers. Fishermen plied their trade off the Newfoundland coast from around 1500. Some Europeans hoped to find an alternative route to Asia (the Northwest Passage), wealthy civilizations, or precious metals, but few found what they sought. They did not however, confront an untamed wilderness but rather people who often lived in villages and towns. [(16th century) Library of Congress]

    Seminole US - Southeast
Lately, while down in the land of the Seminole, I ran across what is, to me, an entirely new style of moccasin; a very simple style and probably the most primitive form of moccasin used by the American Indian. It is still in use by a few of the Seminole Indians in the swamp and lakelands of Florida. This form of foot covering, one of which I now have in hand, can be of little protection against thorns or snake bites.

    Cherokee History in Georgia

Today, some argue, we are at the dawn of a new era, one that will change the core of our society. Instances of cultural change on a societal level are rare in the history of the world. Europeans begin such a change in the 1400's, fueled by the ink of Gutenburg's printing press. Yet no society makes a change comparable to the dramatic cultural shift that the Cherokee accomplish in North Georgia from 1794 to 1835.

LITTLE ROCK, AR KARN radio talk-show host flooded with "bigot complaints "Good little Indians" remark reaches Natives nationally For more than a century, the federal government forced Native Americans to attend boarding schools in order to turn them into "good little Indians". A Little Rock, AR. talk-show host is, apparently, of the same mindset - as evidenced by his comment made over KARN radio on June 2, 2003. "I was on my way to work, listening to Dave Ellswick's show," recalled Kathy Bauer. "They'd been talking about rude people, when Ellswick said, if they didn't act like little Indians there would be no problem!". Help stop the hate by signing the petition today!

    Lost Tribes and the Moundbuilders
      US - Southeast
From the time Europeans arrived in the Americas, they encountered the native peoples inhabiting the land. These American Indians were not expected and had to be explained. Too, the explorers and settlers saw earthworks they couldn't explain, some of them simple burial mounds containing skeletons and grave goods, some in the shapes of animals, and some as huge pyramid-shaped structures rivaling the pyramids of Egypt. They didn't believe the Indians could have built such magnificent structures. Instead they proposed a range of fanciful explanations for who the Indians were and for who built the mounds. Indians, too, have had their own explanations for their origins. Both conflict with archaeological evidence. The links that follow present some of the speculations and our brief comments about them.

Paleoindian Period - Florida Historical Contexts
      US - Southeast
Archaeological evidence indicates that, in addition to hunting small game and gathering wild plants and shellfish, Paleoindians stalked now-extinct Pleistocene megafauna; however, the role these large animals played in the day-to-day business of making a living varied considerably across the continent. Large, stemless, stone spear points, the most diagnostic of the artifacts made by Paleoindians, are time-markers used by archaeologists to identify Paleoindian sites. Due to the ravages of time, erosion, and decomposition of perishable artifacts, projectile points and other stone artifacts are often all that remain to represent these early prehistoric people and their hunting-gathering way of life. - The Setting- Material Culture- Subsistence- Settlement Patterns- Base Camps and- Villages- Quarries- Short Term Camps- Kill Sites- Research Questions- Important Sites- Isolated Projectile- Points- Chronology- Technology- Preservation Goals- Subsistence Questions- Social Organization- Settlement Patterns- Questions.
