Trapping in the conventional sense is often associated with the actual tool used in the capture of game. In this paper it is meant as the method in which land is modified or utilized for the purpose of trapping game in a contained area where butchering can take place. One advantage of this type of hunting strategy over individual attempts is that it is more energy-efficient, demanding less energy expenditure per individual in the hunting process.

Cultural Readings - La Potherie wampum
    Iroquois US - Northeast
La Potherie, an admirer of Iroquois culture, includes this image of Iroquois wampum with this note: wampum "is their writing for making peace treaties, for diplomacy, for expressing their thoughts, for settling disputes, for condemnation or for absolution; it serves as an ornament for young warriors going to battle, who make it into bracelets and belts which they place on their white shirts."
Cultural Readings: Colonization & Print in the Americas
    Iroquois US - Northeast
No utterance of any diplomatic occasion was valid until authenticated by the exchange of wampum in the form of strings or belts. Wampum served to engender further diplomatic contact - its presentation was a gesture that required a repricocal effort on the part of the recipient. Acceptance of the gift of wampum implied the acceptance of its message. In this way, wampum functioned like a certificate. This wampum belt is an abstract representation of an alliance between two peoples, signified by the straight path running between them.

    Tuscarora US - Northeast
This very early (if not the first) account of Native American history and myth, written and published in English by an Indian, is valuable on that score alone. David Cusick was born around 1780, probably on the Oneida reservation in upstate New York. He served in the War of 1812, during which his village was burned by the British. He was a physician and painter and student of Iroquois oral tradition. He published the first edition of Sketches of Ancient History of the Six Nations as a 28-page pamphlet at Lewiston, NY, in 1827. He re-issued it the following year with additional text and four of his own engravings, and that edition provides the text and illustrations reprinted here. Cusick is thought to have died around 1840.

As the story goes, he secured the relic along with a pipe and a belt from the Indian (Alderman) who shot Philip in 1676. The club was handed down from person to person to Mrs. Laura Anne Daniels (maiden name Fuller) of Union, Maine. Miss Clara Endicott Sears purchased the club in 1930. It was stolen from the Fruitlands Museums in 1970. And, in the summer of 1995, it was returned to the museum.

By Barbara E. Luedtke . Furthermore, regional archaeologists have just begun to discuss a host of issues such as the structure of a regional data base, the level of detail that should be included, "quality control" for data to be entered, and how to provide access to the data base.

      US - Northeast
West Virginia Archaeological Research Library - Emergence of Tribes By 1600, organized tribes such as the Delaware and Shawnee had moved into present-day West Virginia. In addition, the powerful Iroquois Confederacy began exerting its influence on the region. The Confederacy was an alliance of five Iroquois-speaking nations -- Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca -- formed in present-day New York in the late 1500s. In 1722, the Tuscaroras joined the Iroquois Confederacy, which became known as the Six Nations. When Europeans first explored western Virginia in the late 1600s, they discovered few Native Americans. Historian Otis Rice suggests this absence was due to the Five Nations, "which sought domination of the Ohio Valley as part of their effort to control the fur trade with the Dutch, and later the British.

    Nature Bulletins - Birchbark canoes
      US - Northeast
Long before the white man came, the Indians in Canada and the Great Lakes region had perfected the art of building birchbark canoes. Using nature's products and Stone Age tools, they constructed small craft which have never been surpassed and were indispensable to their way of life. The canoe enabled them to penetrate and live in regions where vast forests were almost trackless. They could navigate any of the innumerable lakes or follow a stream to its source, portage across a divide, and paddle down into another river system.
Nature Bulletins - Uses of Mussels
      US - Northeast
The wampum of the early American Indians was beads made from the shells of freshwater mussels or saltwater clams. Each bead, highly polished and cylindrical in shape, was about a quarter of an inch long and either purple or white in color. Strung on strings or woven into patterns on a belt, wampum was used as money, as a symbol of authority, or as a sort of shorthand historical record which only certain interpreters could translate.
    Nature Bulletins - Wampum
      US - Northeast
What is wampum? According to stories about the early colonists, it was Indian money made out of shells. However, wampum -- short for the Algonquian word wampumpeag--means strings of shell beads or belts woven from shell beads True wampum beads had certain sizes, shapes and colors. Each bead, about one-fourth of an inch long, was cylindrical with a hole drilled lengthwise to form a tube. There were two colors: white ones made from a large sea snail called a whelk, and dark purple ones from the quahog -- a saltwater clam of the north Atlantic coast. They were polished glassy smooth and strung on sinew cords or embroidered in patterns on strips of deer skin to make belts.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Oneida Women earned an important part of the family income by selling their artwork to non-Natives at tourist centers such as Niagara Falls and Saratoga Springs. Oneidas and other Iroquois created a new style for tourists which featured floral designs composed of glass beads. The raised beaded designs were applied to new shapes such as handbags, pincushions, needle cases, and wall pockets. Most of these objects were intended to be worn as accessories to women's clothing or to be displayed in Victorian parlors.

    Prehistoric People of Indiana
      US - Northeast
    - by C. Russell Stafford - As Europeans explored and began settling Indiana in the 17th Century and later they encountered Algonquin speaking Miami and Potawatomi as well as other Native American tribes. These aboriginal groups were recent arrivals in what is now Indiana, having been displaced by other native peoples responding to European settlement along the eastern seaboard. These historically known groups, however, are not directly related to the prehistoric cultures identified by archaeologists. Archeological research over the past six decades or more has yielded a wealth of information on the varied and changing life-ways of Native Americans over the last 12,000 years. Unfortunately, much of the record of the past is vanishing through vandalism and urban development, though federal and recent landmark state legislation provide some protection.

Music For The Native Americans - With Storyville, Robbie Robertson's music began to directly incorporate more world music influences; Music for the Native Americans makes that connection more explicit. Most of the album is quite evocative, recalling an American version of Peter Gabriel's mediterranean exploration Passion. Robertson writes some fully formed songs, but most of the record is devoted to instrumental, incidental film music, and that's where he fully explores new musical territory. Music for the Native Americans is a soundtrack (to Ted Turner's TV Production, The Native Americans), yet it contains some Robertson's most challenging and complex music.

Unlike the Plains Indians, who could dismantle their dwellings and take their housing with them, the Shawnee built permanent structures that had to be left behind. It might be expected that a people who moved as often as the Shawnee would adopt movable houses similar to the teepee used by the Indians on the Western Plains. But conditions in the Eastern Woodlands differed from those in the Plains in several respects. Unlike the Plains, the Woodlands offered an abundant supply of materials for houses, a circumstance making it unnecessary to transport such materials from place to place.

Significance of Wampum to Seventeenth Century Indians in New England
      US - Northeast
by Lois Scozzari - For the land, people, and animals of pre-colonial New England, the seventeenth century was a tumultuous one. They suffered the total rearrangement of the social and ecological balance achieved in previous centuries. The environment had been gradually and sometimes deliberately shaped into an abundantly productive ecosystem by indigenous people who had learned to live as part of their surroundings, adapting themselves to it and its seasons. The ability of people living on the land to move in accordance with its offerings was the key to a system of balance. These people recognized the necessity of balance in both the use of resources and in human relationships.

An Apache tipi and a Navajo hooghan framework, an illuminated walk-in sky theater, and more than 300 objects from the Museum's extensive archaeological and ethnographic Southwest collections offer insight and information about the history and cultural traditions of these native peoples.

    by Alice Nash
The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center (MPMRC) is an extraordinary, tribally owned-and-operated museum of New England Indian history and culture, built at a cost of $193.4 million. An antidote to museums featuring Native artifacts removed from all cultural context, or older-style dioramas depicting primitive, generic Indians, the MPMRC delivers an impassioned message: "We are Pequot. This is our land. We are still here." What is more, the museum raises provocative questions about the historical process--what we know about Indians and how we know it.

"There is no statute of limitations on fraud." In this ambitious piece, Jon takes on the turbulent history of Native Americans, specifically of those in Western Massachusetts. Through interviews with local Indians and advocates, he uncovers some hidden history, sheds light on the ongoing struggle for energy resources, and explores alternative ways to celebrate the Quincentennial. Jon concludes that "despite the barriers of prejudice and poverty, there is legitimate cause for hope" for unexpected reasons. [As originally published in The Valley Optimist in June, 1992.]

From these shells Hiawatha made the first wampum beads and used them to unite the tribes in peace.

Waaban Aki Crafting Reproduction Wampum Beads
      US - Northeast
We manufacture our own affordable individually-made simulated wampum beads that actually -look- like the Native-made wampum beads of the 1600's. Other types of imitation glass or shell wampum beads available today can lead to frustrating attempts to reproduce durable realistic looking wampum belts. We've found the translucent white and blue glass beads are too skinny - their sharp edges cut even the strongest of threads; the iridescent soft-shell beads dyed to a purple far too light for quahog, fade after exposure to sun or water to their original white.

    Wampum
      US - Northeast
Since they had no writing system, the Iroquois depended upon the spoken word to pass down their history, traditions, and rituals. As an aid to memory, the Iroquois used shells and shell beads. The Europeans called the beads wampum, from wampumpeag, a word used by Indians in the area who spoke Algonquin languages.
    Wampum
      US - Northeast
Wampum strings (for minor points) and belts (for major issues) were always exchanged as an important adjunct to record keeping. Although such belts were valuable, they were not (as many easterners thought, and as many people still think) a form of currency. Rather, they were a form of record-keeping developed among the tribes through the centuries and used to impress indelibly the desired points embodied in the message of the speaker delivering them.

George Washington Covenant Belt (Reproduction) - The original Washington wampum belt is most often identified with the Canandaigua Treaty of 1794, which pledged peace between the United States and the Six Nations of the Iroquois. Wampum History and Background
      US - Northeast
European traders and politicians, using beads and trinkets, often exploited gift exchange to gain Native American favor or territory. With the scarcity of metal coins in New England, Wampum quickly evolved into a formal currency after European/Native contact, it\'s production greatly facilitated by slender European metal drill bits. Wampum was mass produced in coastal southern New England. The Narragansetts and Pequots monopolized the manufacture and exchange of wampum in this area.

    Wampum Shell Beads
      US - Northeast
A bead researcher can't say enough about wampum. It is the most written about bead in the world. It is the most important bead in American history. Yet, few people know what it is. Wampum (wampumpeake) consists of small, tubular beads made of white or violet sea shells. True or "council" wampum is about a quarter of an inch (6 mm) long and half as wide. Larger wampum beads were made in white-run factories in New York and New Jersey, the last one closing about 100 years ago.
    Wampum, Treaties Sacred Records

Its name comes from the Narraganset word po-qua-hock. Belt-wampum beads were rectangular cutouts, with drilled holes, rolled smooth on sandstone, then woven into a shell-beaded fabric. They recorded agreements, with the purple color predominant if the agreement was considered more important, serious, or sad.

    White Birch
      US - Northeast
The graceful white birch, often planted in yards as an ornamental tree, is native to the Connecticut River Valley. This species grows wild throughout northern North America, and can be found in woods, most easily identified by its pure white bark that peels off the trunk in thin, paper-like layers. Another of this plant's common names, paper birch, and its scientific name, Betula papyrifera, which means paper- bearing birch, reflect the paper-like nature of the tree's outer bark.
    White Oak Fur Post
      US - Northeast
The year is 1798 and the fur trade is booming. Our fur trading post is located near the upper reaches of the Mississippi River in the north woods. In another 60 years this will become the state of Minnesota. But for now, enter and join a hearty group of gentlemen and voyageurs. They are talking about the rendezvous. Later they may talk about the fur trade, sing some songs, perhaps talk about the winter to come. It is a time of adventure, challenge, dangers, and rewards..

    Wood Working
      US - Northeast
Wood is naturally very susceptible to decay. Little wood remains from ancient sites, so much of the information given here is common sense, theory or taken from ethnographies. It seems that most of the wood that still exists in ancient archeological sites are found either in garbage pits or as the bottom remains of posts driven deep into the ground. Posts also left impressions in the soil after they decayed. Digging sticks were undoubtedly used, and impressions of bark as coverings for buildings and pits.

    Wyandot Clothing
    Wyandot US - Northeast
For the matter of clothing. It is necessary to freeze your subject in time because the clothing changed quite rapidly after mid-eighteenth century. I will try to describe what an "unspoiled" Wyandot as he might have gazed accross the Detroit River aboiut 1777. Even so, the costime varied with the season and changed somewhat from the ceremonial to the day-to-day dress and also had to be adjusted for the hunt or the war path.

“Your People Live Only Upon Cod”: An Algonquian Response to European Claims of Cultural Superiority
    Wampanoag US - Northeast
Sure about the superiority of their civilization, European missionaries and teachers tried to convert Indians to Christianity and the European way of life. Some Indians did adopt new ways after disease and violence had decimated their communities; others rejected the European entreaties and pointed out the arrogance of these claims of cultural superiority.
