- Crawford Lake Indian Village
|
Iroquois |
Canada - Eastern |
- This fifteenth century Iroquoian Village was reconstructed on its original site to create a unique opportunity to expand our understanding and appreciation of Ontario's original people. Three sources of information are being used to reconstruct the village. Archaeological data determined the exact location of the main structures along with other inground features such as fire pits and posts. Historical documentation (the records of Jesuits and early explorers) provided details of the above ground portions of the longhouses, palisade walls and smaller village structures. Finally, the native peoples of today who carry on the traditions of their ancestors help us gain a stronger appreciation of native culture and its unique relationship with Mother Earth.

- Cultural Readings - La Potherie wampum
|
Iroquois |
US - Northeast |
- La Potherie, an admirer of Iroquois culture, includes this image of Iroquois wampum with this note: wampum "is their writing for making peace treaties, for diplomacy, for expressing their thoughts, for settling disputes, for condemnation or for absolution; it serves as an ornament for young warriors going to battle, who make it into bracelets and belts which they place on their white shirts."

- No utterance of any diplomatic occasion was valid until authenticated by the exchange of wampum in the form of strings or belts. Wampum served to engender further diplomatic contact - its presentation was a gesture that required a repricocal effort on the part of the recipient. Acceptance of the gift of wampum implied the acceptance of its message. In this way, wampum functioned like a certificate. This wampum belt is an abstract representation of an alliance between two peoples, signified by the straight path running between them.

- The longhouses were built by the men in the village. The wood for the houses was cut down in the spring when it was still flexible, and brought to the village. The ends of the posts were sharpened into points using stone axes, and some were charred, or burned, to make it last longer in the ground. The walls of the longhouse were made from elm bark that was cut into rectangular slabs to be used for roof shingles and wall siding.

- The Iroquois are the originators of the modern day game of Lacrosse. Shrouded in time, Lacrosse was played among the Confederacy long before the coming of the Europeans to the shores of North America. It can be said that when the Europeans first came to America, Lacrosse was one of the most popular and widespread games played across the continent and with many variations. The long stick game played internationally today belongs to the Iroquois.

|
Iroquois |
US - Northeast |
- During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Oneida Women earned an important part of the family income by selling their artwork to non-Natives at tourist centers such as Niagara Falls and Saratoga Springs. Oneidas and other Iroquois created a new style for tourists which featured floral designs composed of glass beads. The raised beaded designs were applied to new shapes such as handbags, pincushions, needle cases, and wall pockets. Most of these objects were intended to be worn as accessories to women's clothing or to be displayed in Victorian parlors.

|
Iroquois |
US - Northeast |
- One legend tells how the Iroquois hero Hiawatha, while travelling through the territory of the Mohawks, came to the edge of a great lake. As he was wondering how to cross it, a huge flock of ducks descended on the lake and began to drink the water. When the birds rose up again, the lake was dry and its bed was covered with shells. From these shells Hiawatha made the first wampum beads and used them to unite the tribes in peace.
