- Roy Thomas is an Ahnisnabae-born Artist. Roy has devoted his time learning about the ways of his people, their teachings and the ways of nature. While he is basically a self-taught artist, Roy is guided by the memories of his grandparents who taught him what to paint. Today Roy is a painter in the Ojibway Woodland style. This style uses symbolisms and imagery inspired by the pictographs that Roy also seen as a child. The spirit of art and his elders have taught him what to paint. When he paints the visions of the traditional teachings it’s for his people, for his family, for the community and for his nation.

- Canada's Polar Life: Traditional Knowledge
|
|
Canada - Northern |
- Given the reliance of their culture on the harvest of wildlife, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Inuit developed a deep understanding of polar life. They created a practical classification system for the organisms they encountered, and gained a detailed knowledge of their seasonal movements and behaviours. They also created a rich mythology, which often featured Arctic life and was passed down to each generation through oral tradition.

Canada - Northern |
- I was born in old Hazelton
in 1941. I am Fire Weed
clan of the Gitksan Nation. I
spent half of my
life at the North Pacific
Cannery in Port Edward, BC
and the other half back in
Hazelton.
I remember going out with
my great grandmother at a
very young age to strip
cedar bark. She used to dry
huckleberries on cedar
mats that would fit inside
the cedar bentboxes. She
would alternate four layers
of berries and mats to fill
the boxes to dry the berries
for the winter. That was my
first memory of cedar
weaving.
