On 6 January 1998, The Huntsville Item newspaper [Huntsville, Texas, USA] published a Guest Column by Standing Deer, a 65-year-old Choctaw man incarcerated in the "control unit" at Estelle prison in Huntsville. In his column, Standing Deer quoted a poem previously published by another prisoner, entitled "When I Get Out." As a result of this column, Standing Deer was accused of "terrorism" and was put in solitary confinement. Standing Deer has been active in prisoner issues, especially those concerning American Indians, for many years.
