ASCII text of "I would rather chuse the liberty to kill any Savage...." (Bouquet to Amherst, 25 June 1763); microfilm reel 34/40, item 289.

I have no pretention to be a judge of Indian Affairs, but I should be sorry we should ever appear to be under the least obligation to the perfidious Cherokees, and as to the Catawbas they are no more a Nation: I would rather chuse the liberty to Kill any Savage that may come in our way, than to be perpetualy doubtful whether they are Friends or Foes.
